Browse all propertiesJeffreys Bay — J-Bay to anyone who's been — is famous worldwide for Supertubes, one of the best right-hand point breaks on the planet. But this town has grown well beyond its surfing roots. Today it's a proper family-friendly holiday destination with long white beaches, a relaxed vibe, and self-catering options that range from beachfront flats to bush chalets on the outskirts.
Visit between June and August if you want to watch the pros ride during the surf season, or come in December and January for warm water, long days, and that classic South African summer holiday feeling. Shoulder months like March and September are golden — fewer people, warm enough to swim, and better rates on accommodation.
Your top three things to do: surf or take a lesson at Supertubes or Kitchen Windows — there are breaks for every level, not just the pros. Walk the length of Dolphin Beach at low tide when the sand stretches out forever and pods of dolphins cruise the backline. And visit the Shell Museum if you want a break from the sun — it's surprisingly interesting and one of the largest collections in the country. J-Bay suits surfers, young families, friend groups, and couples looking for a chilled coastal break. Most self-catering places come with a braai and a stoep where you can sit with a cold drink and watch the sun go down.
A tip the regulars know: drive out to Aston Bay at the south end of town for sundowners. The beach faces west, so you get the full sunset over the dunes — something you don't get from the main J-Bay beaches. Bring a camp chair and a braai stand, and you've got the best evening setup in the Kouga.
